Frequently Asked Questions for 26-27 SPT Junior Gold Hockey
HOW OFTEN DO SPT JG TEAMS SKATE EACH WEEK?
During the regular season, SPT teams usually skate 3-4 times per week - usually 1 practice and 2-3 games.
WHAT ABOUT SPT HOME GAMES?
Over the past 3 seasons, JG teams have been able to schedule all home games at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena. Home (and away) games are played on all days of the week. Scheduling home games is dependent on ice availability after select prioritized groups (i.e. STA High School) schedules are satisfied. It is anticipated this situation will continue.
WHEN IS THE JUNIOR GOLD REGULAR SEASON?
The 26-27 JG regular season runs from early December 7 through February 26. Playoffs and the State Tournament continue through March 21. League schedules are available December 2. Consideration for important STA dates and events (i.e.school exams) are included in scheduling games and practices for SPT teams.
WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR PLAYER PARTICIPATION?
Players must register with USA Hockey plus complete all age-related SafeSport training and waiver forms to participate. There have been JG16 (open to sophomores), JGB (open to all grades), and JGA (open to all grades.) teams.
WHEN AND WHERE DO TEAMS PRACTICE?
When ice is available, teams practice at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena (STIA). Generally practice times at STIA are later in the evening. It is rare that practice ice is available right after school at STIA for JG teams. Additional practices held at Woog Arena in South St. Paul and ice availability tends to be right after school.
DO JG TEAMS PLAY IN TOURNAMENTS?
Teams try to schedule at least 1 tournament each season. The JGA team will participate in the Wayzata Invitational Tournament during the MLK weekend. Depending on which 2nd team is formed, at least one tournament is planned. Most tournaments have been “in-town,” for cost considerations, but it is possible that an “out-of-town” tournament could be arranged. Typically any travel, accommodations etc. for out of town tournaments carries an additional cost to the team.
WHAT ABOUT EQUIPMENT?
When first playing SPT JG hockey, players are asked to purchase their own Navy helmets (with mask) and gloves. Players may select whichever brand best suits their needs as long as it is Navy in color. Obviously, this equipment will be used for the entire time while playing SPT JG hockey and kept by the player.
WHAT COSTS ARE REQUIRED FOR PLAYERS?
Player fees have been in the $1,650 - $1,750 range and are influenced by some external sources of financial support. They are anticipated to be in the same range for the 26-27 season. Player fees cover league costs, including playoff entry, State Tournament fees, and the cost of referees. External sweaters and socks (practice and game), coaches stipends, and tournament entry fees also contribute to the total fee. Player fees do not cover any team/player apparel or team meals. Players are also responsible for their own transportation to all games and practices.
WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT EXPECTED FROM PLAYERS?
Players are expected and required to participate in all scheduled practices, games, and team events - including the State Tournament.
